Big Ten Basketball: Analyzing each program’s 2020 recruiting classes
Maryland Terrapins: No. 14 Big Ten, No. 85 Nation
Marcus Dockery 6’1 / 165 CG:
As captain of Brewster Academy, the three-star combo guard was able to demonstrate how well he can combine the skills of both backcourt positions. As a true point guard, his head is always up while leading the fast break looking to pass to the teammate with the highest-scoring opportunity. In addition, he is a “catch and shoot” player from the perimeter, and once he establishes his shot from the outside, he will utilize a shot fake to get his left-handed mid-range shot off.
Aquan Smart 6’3 / 175 PG:
For whatever reason, the three-star guard from Niles North High School does not get the benefit of the combo guard moniker. One, however, does not average 22.7 ppg without being able to hit consistency from beyond the arc when playing in the backcourt. Especially since Smart is not overwhelmingly explosive off the dribble.
He tends to set his defender up for a ‘stop and pop’ by using his ability to rise above his defender to get a clear look for his mid-range jumpers. Playing down low on defense contributed to his 3.7 rpg and1.5 bpg.
