NCAA Basketball: Ranking the 10 teams in running for 5-star Daimion Collins
8. LSU Tigers
Head coach Will Wade has had some recent success with five-star big men. Naz Reid and Trendon Watford had quality freshmen campaigns but it’s fair to note that they came in with already solid offensive games. Collins is more of a defender than scorer right now so there will have to be some adjustments in how he’s developed.
He’ll have plenty of talent around him if Coach Wade continues his impressive recruiting. Incoming five-star guard Cam Thomas may or may not be around after one year, as well as upperclassmen guard Javonte Smart. But transfers Shareef O’Neal and Josh LeBlanc will be around and have an impact, along with four-star freshmen, Eric Gaines and Mwani Wilkerson. There are a pair of three-star center commits joining the roster in Bradley Ezewiro and Josh Gray but unless one of them breaks out, Collins should be able to pass them over on the depth chart.
There are two issues regarding Collins fit with the Tigers. The first being their own issues with the NCAA regarding improper recruiting conduct. Considering what happened with Oklahoma State already, it’s not impossible that this program gets hit for the 2021-22 season.
Even more of a potential issue is that the Tigers already have a quality big man commit in the 2021 class in Jerrell Colbert, a four-star ranked recruit just a few spots away from Collins. That would indicate a competitive battle between the two for minutes. The other teams on this list don’t have a big man that is as good committed at the moment. It’ll be hard for LSU to get him to join Colbert, possibly not being postseason eligible.
