America East Basketball: Top 10 head coaches of the century (2000-20)
By Joey Loose
5. Dennis Wolff – Boston University (2000-2009)
Before taking over his first D1 program, Wolff had plenty of experiences in a long assistant coaching career. He spent time at Virginia, Wake Forest, and a few other schools before taking the job at Boston University in 1994. Before the turn of the century, he led the Terriers to the NCAA Tournament in 1997, though things had grown stale in the years following that run.
Since 2000, Wolff had done great work building consistency for the Terriers. He won three straight regular-season titles, including leading the Terriers back to the NCAA Tournament in 2002. In each of the next three seasons, they played in the NIT, winning at least 20 games in all of those seasons. Wolff remains Boston University’s winningest head coach.
With little success in his final few seasons, Wolff was fired in 2009. He later became the women’s coach at Virginia Tech, though that tenure was largely unsuccessful. He made a certain impact in his fifteen seasons in the America East, leading Boston University to one of their finest eras of success. Brighter days were ahead for the program by the time of his firing, but that doesn’t dilute his accomplishments in the years before.
