NCAA Basketball: 10 teams who need strong 2021 recruiting classes
Georgetown Hoyas
James Akinjo, Mat McClung, Josh LeBlanc, Galen Alexander, Myron Gardner have all transferred out of Georgetown, with all, at one point, but one expected to be suiting up for the Hoyas during the 2021-22 season, recruiting just became much more important for Patrick Ewing.
The class would not weigh so heavy if Ewing would have had more success with his 2020 class. 247sports has Jamari Sibley ranked No. 100 and Tyler Beard at No.154 are way above the other two who are not in the top 360. All this discussion is moot if Top 100 recruit Terrance Williams did not decommit in order to go play for another former NBA player at Michigan.
Ewing has completed three seasons at Georgetown and has compiled a 19-35 Big East record. Ewing was hired to replace John Thompson III who was relieved of his duties after making the tournament eight of his thirteen years but failed to in his last two seasons. With Ewing already having three years (they were not making the tournament pre-COVID) in the rearview mirror, Ewing needs to start winning.
As it stands, Ewing has failed at winning, failed at retaining players, and failed at recruiting. At some point, something has to give, and since the son of Georgetown’s legendary coach can get fired, there is no reason a legendary player will not as well.
