BYU Cougars

BYU Basketball was having their best season since the 2010-11 campaign when they went 14-2, won the Mountain West Conference Regular Season Championship while spending the entire season in the Associated Press Poll, peaking at No. 4 and finishing at No. 10. The Cougars were led by senior Jimmer Fredette and his 28.9 points per game that season, along with fellow senior Jackson Emery with 12.5 points per game. Behind their two senior leading scorers, the Cougars would get two victories in the NCAA tournament before losing to two-seed Florida in the Southeast Regional Final.

Similar to the 2010-11 season, the Cougars’ final four weeks in the Associated Press Poll was anchored by their seniors. A pattern Coach Mark Pope can only hope continues come 2021-22 season, as they are set to have six seniors, just one fewer than they had in 2019-20. The only difference is, the three seniors were their highest average scorers with Yoeli Childs 22.2 ppg, 9.0 ppg was No. 80 on the 2016 final Recruiting Services Consensus Index (RSCI) and TJ Haws was No. 45 on the final 2014 RSCI.

With six recruits arriving in Provo, Coach Pope will replenish the number of players, but there is no indication that the quality of the players is going to improve. 247sports ranks Caleb Lohner as BYU’s highest recruit at No. 194. If the Cougars want to be able to get some respect playing out of the WCC, they are going to need to recruit some talent for their 2021 class to go along with the senior leadership they will have.
