NCAA Basketball: 10 teams who need strong 2021 recruiting classes
Minnesota Golden Gophers
The addition on Both Gach transferring from Utah is not enough to keep Minnesota Basketball off this list. Especially since Gach is currently in the process of waiting to see if his appeal gets accepted in order to be eligible to play in the 2020-21 season. After averaging 10.7 ppg at Utah during his sophomore year, Gach is going to use his final year of collegiate basketball ball to warm-up for the NBA Draft.
Coach Richard Pitino would be able to avoid the coaching hot-seat a lot easier if sophomore Daniel Oturu (20.1 ppg, 11.3 rpg) was not on his way to the NBA. In addition, starting point guard Marcus Carr (15.4 ppg, 6.5 apg) has simply declared for the NBA Draft in order to get feedback from the Undergraduate Advisory Committee. This step is an indication that he does not plan to be back for the 2021-22 season.
Minnesota’s 2020 class is ranked in the middle of the Big 10 classes, highlighted by No.127 Jamal Mashburn. The three incoming freshmen should still be suiting up for the Golden Gophers, but none of the three are going to be the reason why the Golden Gophers have their second Big Ten winning season under the guidance of Coach Pitino. With potential top-90 recruit Treyton Thompson set to go to Minneapolis for the 2021-22 season, more will be needed than the 8.5 ppg the 2019-20 freshmen produced.
