Big South Basketball: Top 10 head coaches of the century (2000-20)
By Joey Loose
2. Eddie Biedenbach – UNC Asheville (2000-2013)
Even before he wound up in Asheville, Biedenbach had a very full coaching career. He was an assistant with NC State when they won the national title in 1974. He spent time as head coach at Davidson and also on staff at Georgia. He took over UNC Asheville in 1996, securing a pair of Big South regular-season titles before the turn of the century.
In the time since, he led the Bulldogs to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a First Four win in 2011. His 2012 team nearly pulled off the unthinkable against 1-seed Syracuse. He won 256 total games in his career with the Bulldogs and is responsible for some of their greatest successes in his final years.
Biedenbach resigned in 2013 and hasn’t become a head coach again, leaving his program as we’ve already seen in Nick McDevitt’s capable hands. His Asheville teams weren’t consistently dominating the Big South, but he built great success throughout his long tenure. Even though things didn’t work well when he led Davidson years earlier, he certainly left a lasting legacy with these Bulldogs.
