NCAA Basketball: 15 underrated storylines to root for in 2020-21 season
Sunday Okeke – return from Torn Achilles
From playing soccer in Nigeria to being posted on YouTube to playing in Connecticut at Greens Farms Academy where he averaged 15 points,14 rebounds, and 3.6 blocks (godeacs.com) to becoming a preferred walk-on for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
The 6’8 forward has only averaged 5.4 minutes of playing time while averaging less than a point per game. The 2019-20 season did very little to add to those stats as he would play just five minutes over 2 games before tearing his right Achilles tendon versus Columbia when he got his only stats of the season by collecting three defensive rebounds in three minutes.
Having suffered the injury on Nov.10, 2019, the expectation is that Okeke will be cleared to play for new head coach Steve Forbes and alongside the three grad transfers. Even with Jonah Antonio, Ian Dubose, and Jalen Johnson joining the Wake Forest for 2020-21, they have only twelve players under scholarship, thus having one scholarship remaining. If you did not have enough reason to root for Okeke to return from injury and have a good season, you have to root for Coach Forbes to hand over a leftover scholarship to a player in his senior year, who was quoted in the Westport News in 2016.
