5. Tevester Anderson – Jackson State (2003-2013)

Anderson had nearly four decades of coaching experience by the time he arrived at Jackson State, picking up that experience in all sorts of ways. He spent nearly two decades as a high school head coach before spending time in the SEC, serving on the coaching staffs at Georgia and Auburn. Before Jackson State, he had spent time with Murray State, including five years as head coach, leading the Racers twice to the NCAA Tournament.

Under Anderson’s watch, Jackson State was a SWAC contender for nearly his entire decade with the school. The Tigers made just their third NCAA Tournament in program history under his leadership in 2007, adding a regular-season title a few seasons later. In addition to winning just under 62% of SWAC games, his Tigers were at or above .500 in conference play in all but one season.

Jackson State had some great seasons with Anderson at the helm before his retirement in 2013. While a few more postseason appearances would’ve certainly pushed him up this list, he certainly made an impact during his decade with the Tigers. Making any program consistently contend in a conference like the SWAC is no disappointment.
