UC Santa Barbara Gauchos

The local connections that former Arizona assistant and current Gaucho head coach Joe Pasternack has seems to have helped so far with Washington. And while this team isn’t at the same level as Big West powerhouse UC Irvine, they do return a good amount of production from last season’s 21-win team.

UC Santa Barbara already has a pair of guard transfers joining the team in Josh Pierre-Louis and Calvin Wishart but neither are elite ball-handlers compared to Washington. There’s no question that the prospect would have a major role with the Gauchos for as long as he wants to stay but besides being a clear one-bid league, the Big West has next to no national exposure. He’d have to fall in love with the program for them to be true contenders in this process.

Washington State Cougars

With star guard Isaac Bonton set to graduate after next season, there’s a clear need for the Cougars to find his capable replacement. This is a team and head coach (Kyle Smith) that has had success with point guards, including Frankie Ferrari when Coach Smith was at San Francisco. From a playing time standpoint, Washington would have a huge role and opportunity to produce a lot of numbers.

At the same time, Washington State has struggled mightily to make a move up the Pac-12 ladder. And if leading scorer CJ Elleby decides to go pro after his junior season, Washington would have very little to work with not only in his freshman yeat but going forward. If winning is a priority to this recruit, I’m not sure that the Cougars can make a good enough argument to win him over.

With several top-100 class of 2021 point guards now shortening their lists, we’re seeing which programs are clearly looking to add a ball-handler as soon as possible. Depending on what happens elsewhere, we could have a much better indicator as to where Tyty Washington will ultimately end up. Arizona State is certainly a contender but this prospect doesn’t seem afraid to go the mid-major route. Washington could shake up the entire process by doing so.
