NCAA Basketball: 20 biggest pending waiver decisions for 2020-21 season
12. Deandre Williams – Evansville to Memphis
2019-20 stats: 15.2 ppg and 6.9 rpg
Although he only scored nine points in the Purple Aces historic win at Kentucky last season, Williams did manage to put up huge numbers before an injury took him out. It included a 37-point effort against Miami (Oh) and multiple 20+ point games, while also rebounding at a high-level.
Because of the off-the-court issues involving the head coach, Williams could get himself a waiver. For a Memphis team that doesn’t have a clear-cut go-to scoring, the athletic 6’9 forward could come in and lead the team in scoring. But he’ll have to fight for minutes with five-star center Moussa Cisse on board along with the return of DJ Jeffries. Either way though, this transfer will do well in Penny Hardaway’s system.
11. Mac McClung – Georgetown to Texas Tech
2019-20 stats: 15.7 ppg and 2.4 apg
It was huge news this offseason that the Hoya guard elected to go to Texas Tech, leaving a tough situation at his previous stop to a program that has plenty of momentum. When healthy this past season, McClung had several 20+ point games and led the team to several upset victories.
Even with the fanfare, this isn’t one of the 10 most pressing waiver claims because the fit doesn’t make great sense. He’s an off-guard looking to play at the point guard position for the Red Raiders, even though Kyler Edwards is a much better passer. And incoming five-star guard Nimari Burnett could upstage everyone as a freshman. But if McClung can become a plus-defender, Texas Tech would certainly benefit from him being able to create his own shot and boost the overall offense.
