NEW YORK, NEW YORK – AUGUST 18: Makur Maker #21 (Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images) /

Maker must do his part

Key #1: Maker must help change the culture at Howard

It is great that Maker wants other top prospects to understand the value of making HBCUs respectable again, but before he gets too ahead of himself, he needs to make sure that he does his part first.

Now, I like to think of myself as a fairly rational human being, and I know that it wouldn’t be wise for me to sit up here, and say that Maker will come in and turn Howard into a potential national championship contender. After going back and reviewing their track record, I think that Maker should just be focused on making the Bison competitive this season.

Will that task be easy? Absolutely not, but it is clear that Maker is up for the challenge, considering the fact that he knows exactly what he is getting himself into. Even if you disagree with his decision, and believe that he is wasting his only year of college basketball at a struggling- low major school, you have to respect the fact that he is thinking about the bigger picture.

Yes, it is obvious that Maker wants to excel at Howard, and put himself in position to be a lottery pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, but more importantly, he wants to prove to the world that the narrative of HBCUs can change for the better if he is not the lone partaker in the movement.

When it comes to Howard’s performance over the past 15 seasons… let’s just say that it’s not something that they should be proud of. I could talk about how poor the Bison have performed year in and year out for quite a while, but I think that you would appreciate it more if I showed you exactly how strenuous life has been for their program from 2005-2020.
