Big 12 Basketball: Biggest needs for each team’s 2021 recruiting class
Oklahoma Sooners
Biggest needs: Small forward, power forward and center
With the Sooners landing mid-major guard transfers Elijah Harkless and Umoja Gibson this offseason (set to sit out unless given a waiver) has set the team up on the perimeter for the foreseeable future. The issues are more in the frontcourt, with leading scorer Khristian Doolittle already having graduated, while forward Brady Manek will leave after next season.
The prized recruit for Oklahoma in the 2021 class is Daimion Collins, a five-star center prospect from the state of Texas. This program is one of several Big 12 teams in the running after he presented an initial list and right now, he’s the Sooners lone top-100 frontcourt target. They already have three-star point guard Bijan Cortes committed, now they need to focus inside going forward.
Oklahoma State Cowboys
Biggest needs: Power forward and center
For the moment, Oklahoma State is banned from the 2021 NCAA Tournament, thanks to sanctions from the NCAA for improper recruiting violations. That’s sad for No. 1 overall recruit Cade Cunningham, who is undoubtedly only around for another year. But with him, along with grad transfer sharpshooter Ferron Flavors Jr. as the only players set to leave, the Cowboys aren’t going to need a huge next recruiting class.
But they will need to find a replacement for center Yor Anei, who transferred to SMU shortly after the ban came. JUCO commit Bernard Kouma is a solid replacement but the 2021 group must include another big man. With Rondel Walker and Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe joining Cunningham in the current class, Oklahoma State will be fine, even if returning point guard Isaac Likelele decides to leave as well. 1-2 frontcourt recruits will be a solid class to balance the roster out.
