Syracuse Basketball: Preview of Orange 2020-21 depth chart
Small Forward
Starter: Quincy Guerrier
Unlike the two positions listed prior, the spot still remains up for contention. Kadary Richmond especially enters as a not just a potential starter, but star player for the Orange as a four-star recruit with an above-average jump shot, quick first step, and solid defensive instincts. Even if he fails to ascend to the starting spot, expect Richmond to still play around 15 to 20 minutes per game at the very least this year.
Griffin maintains a position currently similar to Richmond, as a newcomer yet still someone who bares high expectations and starting potential. His skill set as an offensive weapon and size to potentially help spread the floor certainly improves his case as an option for Coach Boeheim to trust extensively.
Expect Griffin’s overall collegiate basketball experience to give way to some excess minutes over Richmond especially during the season’s early stages, placing him slightly above Richmond. But at the same time, watch for Richmond to potentially shoot up past Griffin if he lives up to his potential while gaining his coach’s trust early on.
What Richmond and Griffin lack though, Quincy Guerrier adds as a returning player familiar to the program, solidifying himself as the team’s likely starter at least during the season’s early stages.
Last year, Guerrier came off the bench as a solid sixth man, averaging just over 20 minutes per game, while contributing 6.9 points, all the while shooting with a 49.7 mark from the field. Now with Hughes gone and only a transfer player paired with freshmen shadowing him as his only competition, Guerrier just seems like the most logical choice.
But despite this, expect a solid rotation to play out between himself, Richmond, and Griffin at this unsettled position.
