Shooting guards

Starter- Justin Moore (21 mins/game)

Other SGs- Bryan Antoine (12 mins/game) and Caleb Daniels (7 mins/game)

Justin Moore’s (11.3 Pts, 3.1 Reb, 1.9 Ast) freshman season was by all accounts very good as the former top-60 recruits’ 11 points per game were enough for third on the team and an All-Big East freshman team selection. The only knock on Moore is that the ball tended to stick in his hands once he got it and in Jay Wright’s pass-first offense you expect that to improve in 2020-21. When Wright goes small expect Moore to play minutes at the 3-spot.

The 29 minutes per game he played at the shooting guard position might be in a little bit of jeopardy, however. Bryan Antoine was arguably the most heralded recruit in Wright’s star-studded 2019 class, but he entered his first season in college basketball having to come back from off-season shoulder surgery and missed the early parts of the season.

Once back, Antoine never truly found his way into the rotation and was still clearly working his way back into basketball shape due to his injury. The expectations are still high for the 16th best player in the 2019 freshman class and he should see an expanded role at the 2-guard.

The Villanova backcourt gets even better and suddenly more crowded than its been in the past couple of seasons with the expectations for Antoine, but also the transfer of Caleb Daniels from Tulane. Daniels averaged 16 points a game for the Green Wave in his sophomore season and if he can improve upon his 34% 3-point percentage from his sophomore season in New Orleans he could see a lot of minutes in Wright’s guard rotation.

There could also be an opportunity for Daniel’s as the main back-up solution to spell Gillespie for a handful of minutes per game. He dished out three assists per game in 2018-19.
