Indiana Hoosiers

2019-20: 66.5 ppg in Big Ten play

Indiana Basketball is losing just one full-time starter in Justin Smith (10.4 ppg) as he transfers to Arkansas, plus Devonte Green (10.8) who came off the bench in all but seven games to spark the offense in the backcourt. Despite leading the Big Ten in free-throw attempts last season, the Hoosiers’ percentage from the line was just 67 percent.

A free-throw percentage that was better than just two other teams in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers offense ended up being a lot of individual play at the end of the shot clock due to the lack of movement which led to Rob Phinisee (7.3 ppg) dribbling too much looking for an open man or shot.

This season, looking for an opening will not be left in the hands of junior point-guard Phinisee, as the highlight of the Big Ten’s second-best recruiting class, five-star point guard Khristian Landers will cherish such opportunities. If the double post game is not working in the key between Joey Brunk (6.8 ppg) and leading scorer Trayce Jackson-Davis (13.5 ppg), where the 6’11 Brunk is guarded by the opposing big man and 6’9 junior Jackson-Davis gets to overpower his defender in the key. Landers will be more than happy to go to the hoop himself.

With under 17 attempts per game, the Hoosiers attempted the least amount of three-pointers, a trend that will continue this season. Even with Alikami Durham (9.8 ppg) on the court, who sometimes looks like a basketball vacuum that dribbles too much and does not beat enough defenders off the dribble, a lot of looks or going to come from Brunk up top drawing out the rim protector, creating an entry pass to Jackson-Davis.

The back-up backcourt will consist of Phinisee running off multiple screens in the paint and Armaan Franklin (3.7 ppg) setting up on the strong side to get open looks off the Jackson-Davis double down.

Four-star freshman and Big Ten ready Jordan Geronimo, at best challenges Jerome Hunter for the starting small forward spot, at worst contributes 15 minutes per game as the better three-point shooter. The loss of 6’10 De’Ron Davis leaves Coach Archie Miller with no height off the bench, which will lead to 6’8 Race Thompson logging more than the 13.6 minutes he is last season. Miller can also use 6’4 freshman Trey Galloway in small ball line-ups.
