NCAA Basketball: Top head coaches under 40 Years old entering 2020-21
By Joey Loose
2. Wes Miller – UNC Greensboro
Somehow, Miller is only 37 despite accomplishing quite a bit during his basketball career already. Long before coaching, he played a backup role on the 2005 North Carolina team that won the national championship. After a few short assistant coaching stints, he was promoted to head coach at UNC Greensboro in 2011 and has never looked back, preparing to begin his tenth full season at the helm.
Things started slow for the Spartans, though Miller was slowly building this program back into prominence. Since 2016, UNC Greensboro has been one of the nation’s most potent mid-majors. During those four seasons, the Spartans are 104-34, have been near the top of the SoCon standings, and made the NCAA Tournament in 2018. Despite competing in recent years with ETSU, Furman, and Wofford atop that suddenly tough league, Miller has had phenomenal results.
Miller’s name will pop up for openings at major conference programs for years to come. Despite his age, he’s shown the ability to recruit and build a program, achieving great success these last few seasons. If anyone is disappointed with the lack of real postseason success with the Spartans, just imagine what Miller could accomplish with the resources at an ACC school. Former SoCon comrades Steve Forbes and Mike Young are now in the ACC, perhaps Miller joins them one day soon.
