Honorable Mentions
Shantay Legans – Eastern Washington
There are certainly more than ten coaches worthy of mention, and Legans is certainly someone whose young coaching career has already been impressive. He’s spent the last three seasons leading Eastern Washington after a near-decade as an assistant with the school. His 59-41 record speaks for itself, while his Eagles were Big Sky regular-season champions this past year.
Mike Boynton – Oklahoma State
After success as an assistant under Frank Martin and Brad Underwood, Boynton took over the Cowboys and has this program in a bright spot. Top recruit Cade Cunningham heads to Oklahoma State this season and could help him lead the Cowboys back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time during his tenure.
Eran Ganot – Hawaii
It’s hard not to mention Ganot, when he led Hawaii to a first-round NCAA Tournament upset in 2016. A former Saint Mary’s assistant, he’s done solid work with the Rainbow Warriors, leading them to that first-round upset when he was just 34 years old. Hawaii hasn’t won a Big West since that initial season but Ganot has shown he’s a solid coach.
Amir Abdur-Rahim – Kennesaw State
Abdur-Rahim had virtually no success in his first season as head coach, but once he starts pumping his recruits through that program, watch out for Kennesaw State in the A-Sun. He recruited Anthony Edwards to Georgia and spent time with Billy Kennedy, including at Texas A&M. Abdur-Rahim is a rising star if he can actually win with these Owls.
