NCAA Basketball: Top head coaches under 40 Years old entering 2020-21
By Joey Loose
8. Jamion Christian – George Washington
For a coach under 40, Christian has certainly gotten around quite a fair bit at the beginning of his coaching career. Before becoming a head coach, he spent time at four different schools, highlighted by a season on Shaka Smart’s bench at VCU. George Washington is already his third D1 head coaching job, having spent six years at alma mater Mount St. Mary’s before a single season with Siena.
Christian is just getting started at George Washington, having been hired last season, but made an impact at each of his first two jobs. At Mount St. Mary’s, he led the Mountaineers to a pair of NCAA Tournament bids and clearly had this program among the best in the NEC during those six seasons. He only stayed for one season at Siena, but recruited star Jalen Pickett and put the Saints in a fantastic position to contend in the future.
George Washington has mightily struggled in recent years, but if Christian can turn this program around then that’ll only elevate his profile. Getting the Colonials competitive in a tough A-10 will be tricky, but if he can find another diamond like Pickett, then it might come sooner than we expect. Christian has already been around despite his young age and is only setting himself up for more success in the future.
