NCAA Basketball: Top head coaches under 40 Years old entering 2020-21
By Joey Loose
4. Andrew Toole – Robert Morris
Toole won’t be under 40 by the time next season begins, but he does already have a decade of head coaching experience under his belt. After playing for Fran Dunphy at Penn, he began a coaching career that took him to Robert Morris in 2007. After serving under future Rutgers coach Mike Rice, he took over the program himself ten years ago and the results have been quite impressive.
Throughout his first decade, the Colonials have become one of the best programs in the NEC. He’s led Robert Morris to a pair of NEC Tournament titles, though this past season’s NCAA Tournament was cancelled before the Colonials could participate. One highlight is Robert Morris’s NIT win over Kentucky in 2013, and Toole won nearly 65% of conference games in the NEC.
Toole might have his eyes on a bigger job someday, but for now, a new challenge awaits regardless. This will be the first season for Robert Morris in the Horizon League. Toole has worked hard to make Robert Morris a potent program and could bring similar success in a brand new conference. While the Colonials haven’t made the impact like a Buffalo or Wofford, maybe their new league will provide Toole that avenue for further success.
