Big 12 Basketball: Each team’s biggest question entering 2020-21 season
TCU Horned Frogs – How will they replace Desmond Bane?
Jamie Dixon’s TCU Horned Frogs had a .500 season, not only when it comes to wins and losses at 16-16, but also on the scoreboard, scoring and surrendering an identical 65 points per game. This is after a year in 2018-19 in which they went 23-14. Now entering 2020-21, Dixon is tasked with replacing Desmond Bane, the team’s leader on the floor, and on the stat sheet as he led the team in every major category except rebounds (2nd), blocks (2nd) and field-goal percentage (2nd).
Also gone are guards Jaire Grayer and Edric Dennis, leaving guard RJ Nembhard and center Kevin Samuel as the team’s top returning scorers. To supplement the roster and make up for the loss of Bane, Dixon has brought in three freshman Eddie Lampkin and Terren Frank who could see time in the frontcourt, along with guard Mike Miles.
Also eligible are three redshirt-freshmen, guards Taryn Todd and Justin Huelskamp, as well as forward Mickey Pearson, Jr. Finally, a couple of transfers should see time for TCU this season, 6’7 forward Kevin Easley, Jr. who was the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year in 2018-19 at Chattanooga where he averaged 14 points and 6.7 boards for the Mocs.
Charles O’Bannon, Jr. played just 17 games over three seasons for USC but comes to TCU as a former top-30 recruit out of high school that had injuries and depth at USC cost him opportunities. Replacing the best player on your team is always difficult, but the hope is Easley, Jr., O’Bannon, Jr. and some of the new faces can fill in the gaps.
