NCAA Basketball: Where will four-star 2021 wing Jahmai Mashack end up?
Tennessee Volunteers
After landing five-star point guard prospect Kennedy Chandler, the Vols are looking to land an off-guard to join him in the class. Mashack, who doesn’t need the ball as much in his hands, would be a nice asset for the team, considering the guards they already have on the roster.
There’s a good chance that one of the incoming five-star guards (Keon Johnson and Jaden Springer) will go pro after next season. But there still is Josiah-Jordan James, Santiago Véscovi, and Oregon transfer Victor Bailey fighting for minutes as well. The Vols are considered a favorite to land Mashack, but he’ll have to compete hard for meaningful minutes in the first couple of seasons.
Texas Longhorns
The Longhorns already have four commitments for its 2021 class, including most recently four-star combo guard Tamar Bates. Between a pair of ball-handlers and natural forwards, there’s still a need for the team to add a true wing, a position that has been of need for a long time.
The likely starting situation for next season on the perimeter is a trio of guards (including seniors Matt Coleman and Jase Febres). Former top-50 small forward Gerald Liddell and top-100 shooting guard Donovan Williams have struggled to take hold of that position, giving a potential clear pathway for Mashack to play out the gate.
There’s a clear fit between the wing and Texas Basketball, especially on defense. He’d help continue their strong defensive unit but may need time to develop into a capable double-digit contributor. That sounds like the rest of the guards on the current roster, which could be both a good or a bad thing.
