NCAA Basketball: Top 25 strongest backcourts for 2020-21 season
By Ian Mumm
18. Connecticut Huskies
If Huskies fans are looking for something to get excited about this season, the move back to the Big East should be at the top of their list. However, the emergence and potential stardom of sophomore James Bouknight in 2020 is a close second. As a freshman last season, Bouknight was 2nd on the team in scoring with 13.0 points per game and is likely a shoo-in to take over the leading spot this Fall. He was solid hitting shots from all 3 levels and was a very reliable shooter from the charity stripe.
Coach Dan Hurley managed to fill the departures of guards Christian Vital and Alterique Gilbert via the transfer market. He landed talented point guard RJ Cole (Howard) and wing Tyrese Martin (Rhode Island). Cole was a volume shooter for the Bison and proved to be a reliable threat at all three levels. He was a proven playmaker on the floor and will look to carry that part of his game over to Storrs.
Martin on the other hand was a dangerous scoring threat inside the perimeter and a strong rebounder to add to the Huskies frontcourt weapons. The experience of both transfers will be readily important towards helping UConn face some of the best teams nationally on a nightly basis.
Reserves Brendan Adams and Andre Jackson make this group one of the strongest in the nation. Adams took a nice step forward in his production between his freshman and sophomore seasons. He will be looking to maintain the consistent production he displayed off the bench in 2020.
Jackson on the other hand comes to the Huskies program after proving to be a quality scoring option on the Nike EYBL circuit capable of affecting all areas of the game. He was solid in the rebounding department and saw the floor well to make plays happen with the ball in his hands. Coach Hurley can feel confident that he will have top weapons available for the program’s return to the Big East conference in 2020.
