NCAA Basketball: Texas Tech, Virginia among top 11 for 4-star Deebo Coleman
Louisville Cardinals
The 2021 class already has four perimeter-oriented players committed, including top-rated JUCO combo guard El Ellis, as well as four-star wings Michael James and Eric van der Heijden. Coleman would be the lone true shooting guard in the class, although Louisville still needs to address some potential holes in the frontcourt.
The Cardinals also have David Johnson and four-star off-guard D’Andre Davis on the roster, so Coleman would have plenty of competition for playing time. Depending on whether or not Coach Mack opts to use two ball-handlers on the court, this recruit, in particular, could struggle to get on the court in the first couple of years.
Memphis Tigers
Virginia Tech transfer Landers Nolley getting a waiver is huge in this situation, as the odds of the shooting guard going pro are very good. Otherwise, Coleman would definitely have to wait his turn as a freshman. The Tigers have other perimeter players in the rotation, including Lester Quinones, Alex Lomax, Boogie Ellis, and Damion Baugh.
As a shooter, Coleman is better than any of those four but he’ll be looking over his head with five-star class of 2022 shooting guard Arterio Morris having already committed. Add to it Coach Penny Hardaway’s desire to add transfers and more five-star prospects, the roster will look far different a couple of years from now. That could either work for or against Coleman.
