Gonzaga Basketball: 10 key storylines to watch for 2020-21 season
Gonzaga looking to land top-3 recruit Chet Holmgren
The Bulldogs have now become a national threat to the “blue bloods” when it comes to recruiting. Suggs is the latest example but the coaching staff hopes to land his teammates Chet Holmgren. After Jonathan Kuminga elected to go pro this offseason, Holmgren became the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2021 class. He didn’t play much this offseason due to Covid-related matters and Patrick Baldwin took over as a result.
Either way, this is one of the very best players in the class with plenty of suitors. And with indications being that he won’t be going to the G League, a college program could be landing a commitment from the 7’0 forward/center with amazing defensive ability and shooting skills. Gonzaga had him for an official visit and is one of seven finalists from his last announced list.
The other teams in the mix include North Carolina, Minnesota, Memphis, and Ohio State. Yet at the moment, the momentum seems to be in favor of the Bulldogs. He would beat Suggs for the highest-rated committed ever for the program and would keep them as a preseason national title contender.
Obviously, having his teammate and friend on the team helps but Gonzaga has other five-star prospects that they’re targeting, including Caleb Houstan and Hunter Sallis. If they can land Holmgren before the season starts, it could help with convincing others to join as well.
