Big 12 Basketball: Ranking of top 15 players for 2020-21 season
By Andrew Tineo
It was unclear, with Coronavirus and the new rules set in place with going directly to the G-League, whether Cunningham would make it to Stillwater. Cade surprised quite a few people by sticking with his commitment and playing his first (and probably only) season with the Cowboys.
It’s always hard to grade freshmen heading to the next level because some games translate better than others. However, with Cunningham, there are reasons why he has “can’t miss” potential from even NBA scouts.
It’s become a trend over the past couple of years for the transition with much taller players handling the point guard position. It somewhat began with Ben Simmons and recently, with 6″7 Lamelo Ball.
Cunningham comes from that same cloth in that his explosiveness, when finishing at the rim is one similar to Simmons. His passing ability is above average, and his jumper is something to keep an eye on.
Cunningham isn’t afraid to step in front of passing lanes and is a relatively sold defender.
The freshman phenom does have some parts to his game that he can improve on. In a system like Mike Boyton, getting Cunningham situated with Likekele could be interesting. The merely-19-year-old Cunningham has all the tools needed to be an NBA prospect, and a potential lottery pick.
Cunningham breathes new life into the Cowboys program and could elevate them to heights, not seen since the Marcus Smart era.
