Point Guards

Starter: Jordan Bohannon

Backup: Joey Touissant

Touissant had a solid freshman season in Bohannon’s absence and will look to improve in year two. There’s a case for him to start, but I expect Bohannon to regain the reigns. He’s started 102 games in his 112 game career. Last season he clearly looked like he was recovering from hip surgery, averaging under double-digits for the first time in his career.

Touissant was solid for a freshman, averaging 6.2 points and 2.9 assists per game. He certainly provides more athleticism than Bohannon, but his 29% shooting from three is a deterrent. Bohannon is the better fit next to Garza.

Connor McCaffery spent some time playing point guard last season and is a high-quality passer, but with two true point guards on the roster, I don’t expect him to play as much as the lead guard.

Shooting guards

Starter: CJ Fredrick

Backups: Jordan Bohannon, Joe Wieskamp

The shooting guard spot belongs to sharpshooter C.J. Fredrick. As a freshman, he shot an absurd 46.1 percent from three on 4.1 attempts. Fredrick missed some time with a foot injury but was very impressive when he played. His shooting makes him a perfect compliment to Garza.

If Iowa wants to play Bohanon and Touissant together, they theoretically could. The combination of two 6-foot guards probably wouldn’t help that lackluster defensive rating, but Touissant’s playmaking with Bohannon and Fredick’s shooting would make for an insane offensive trio.

Iowa could also play a big lineup with Joe Wieskamp at the two, the McCaffery brothers at the three and four, and Garza at the five. Wieskamp is another outlier good shooter that would help the offense.

Incoming freshman Ahron Ullis (younger brother of Tyler Ullis) is a 6’3 guard that is a name to watch. But given the veterans above him, I can’t see him playing serious time.
