NBA Draft 2020: Why Anthony Edwards should still be the No. 1 pick
By Joe Casey
Potential
Any draft pick or undrafted free agent has the chance of being a superstar or an all-time bust. Over the years the NBA has seen their fair share of both and while “potential” is one of the hardest things to measure moving to the next level, Anthony Edwards has it.
He has shown his ability to adapt, excelling in high school, AAU, and college. Even as the game has continued to speed up he continues to deliver on both ends of the floor and looks to continue to do so in the NBA. While he may not come into the league as a Finals MVP caliber player or even an All-Star, he has already developed the skills necessary to earn him minutes in an NBA rotation.
By drafting him with the first overall pick, the Timberwolves would have the ability to help him learn under their two young stars in Towns and Russell. Edwards would also have the ability to develop within the Minnesota system under Ryan Saunders. Over the time he has coached the Timberwolves, Saunders has proven he can get the most out of his players and will play a major role in his development.
Edwards has shown that he will have no problem earning minutes at the next level through his ability to create space, shoot, dribble, and finish around the rim. Combining this with his high-level athletic ability, which some top prospects do not have, Edwards should still be the #1 overall pick in the draft regardless of the current hype around other top prospects.
