NCAA Basketball: Top 25 frontcourts for 2020-21 season
By Ian Mumm
The Cougars are coming off another strong season, finishing 2nd behind Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference standings. However, the program is looking for new stars to emerge with five of their top-6 scoring threats gone from the 2019 team. With so much production missing on the 2020 team, Head Coach Mark Pope will have plenty of opportunities for his new players to help with some of those holes.
Namely Purdue transfer Matt Haarms joined the program, after an interesting divorce from the Boilermakers. Haarms has been a consistent two-way weapon throughout his collegiate career, and he’s hoping to continue to develop with a program that will make him a priority on the floor.
His production from the perimeter has been a particular aspect that Haarms has been working on and will be something to watch this season. He will share the starting gig with forward Kolby Lee. The junior took full advantage of his large increase in minutes last season and will garner even more chances to produce in 2020.
Despite having many options on the roster, the Cougars may lean on Utah Valley transfers Richard Harward and Wyatt Lowell to back up Lee and Haarms. Both players provide strong size, production at their previous stop, and experience to add to the roster.
Likewise, freshman Caleb Lohner joins the program after de-committing from Utah. Lohner is a physical forward with good rebounding instincts and the capability to stretch the floor.
