NBA Draft 2020: Biggest needs for each Eastern Conference franchise
By Tim Edmonds
Picks: 14, 26, 30, 47
Needs: Depth at Point Guard, Center
After reaching the Eastern Conference Finals, expect the Boston Celtics to run it back next season with almost an unchanged roster.
First prioritizing an extension for young star Jayson Tatum, the Celtics have locked themselves into an expensive core of veterans Gordon Hayward and Kemba Walker and another young rising star in Jaylen Brown.
Without much wiggle room to retool, long-time General Manager Danny Ainge will need to get very creative to adjust his roster after losing in six games to the Miami Heat.
The one asset Ainge does have however is draft capital, and plenty of it to add young talent to a Celtics rotation that was exposed at the guard and center positions in heated playoff games.
With Boston holding four picks in this year’s draft headlined by #14, look for the C’s to target a college guard to immediately add to their rotation with some targets including North Carolina’s Cole Anthony and Vanderbilt’s Aaron Nesmith to assist Walker as a ball-handler and take the role Brad Wanamaker held last season.
At Center, the Celtics need to find someone to help supplement Daniel Theis who continually fell into foul trouble last season. A trade for a veteran or a selection of a project like Duke’s Vernon Carey Jr. seems like the best course of action for Ainge going forward.
