Sun Belt Basketball: In-depth look at UT-Arlington star David Azore
By Andrew Tineo
Expectations for David Azore in 2020-21 season
The Mavericks lost four seniors from a season ago, including second-leading scorer, Brian Warren. UT-Arlington has some inexperience on the roster, but quite a few players that redshirted, headlined by freshman Tre Jones from Kennedale.
With Warren graduating, Azore’s expected to have a higher volume in shots in 2020-2021. UT-Arlington was underwhelming as a unit on the offense, averaging 70.6 PPG, ranking 194th in the country at that stat.
It didn’t get much better from beyond the arc as the Mavericks were one of the worst three-point shooting teams in the country. Placing 291st in the country, UTA connected on just 31% of their three-pointers per game.
To expect a big-time jump from the Mavericks offense, it’s going to have to be Azore’s continued progression on offense, to go along with his above-average passing.
The 12th leading scorer in the Sun Belt will have his work cut out for him with new players like Jones and new starters in Nicholas Elame, who is expected to replace Warren at Guard.
It’s a lineup that features seven players in their first year playing for the Mavericks. That will already be an uphill battle for Azore. That will create more opportunities for Azore to excel.
UT-Arlington has always been one of the better teams in the Sun Belt and is expected to make some noise at some point every season. This might be Azore’s opportunity to do so.
David Azore and the Mavericks are expected to begin their 18 game round-robin schedule on New Year’s Eve, with a home contest against Arkansas State.
