NBA Draft 2020: Obi Toppin’s potential fit with the Cleveland Cavaliers
By Joe Casey
Why Obi Toppin for the Cavaliers?
Overall, the Cavaliers can go a few different directions with the fifth pick and it should be noted that if one of the top four players falls, they should certainly look to improve their team with the best player available. With that being said, if the draft goes as most expect, Toppin would have no problem fitting with the current Cavs roster, contributing to the overall success of the team immediately.
Over the past few years, a youth movement has taken over the NBA draft making it almost impossible for players over the age of twenty-one to be selected in the first ten picks. Many teams opt to select “one and done” players to give them time to develop in an NBA system.
Yet, even with this recent change in draft preference Toppin, at 22 years old, has found himself in the mix at the top of draft boards. The reason Toppin has been able to break the trend of recent drafts is not because of his rim-rattling dunks or even his many accolades at the college level, but his undeniable talent.
Labeled by some as bust proof his offensive ability, especially in the pick and roll, combined with his physical attributes, has forced evaluators to consider selecting Toppin instead of developing a younger player in their system.
If Toppin is able to continue to improve especially under a mentor like Kevin Love, he will have no problem becoming an extremely valuable offensive compliment to the backcourt duo of Sexton and Garland, making him an ideal fit in Cleveland.
