NCAA Basketball: Preseason Top-25 power rankings for 2020-21 season
It wasn’t the heavyweights such as Duke, UNC, Virginia, or last season’s favorite threat Louisville that won the ACC last season, but rather a Florida State squad that did it without a single player averaging more than 13.0 ppg. It was great depth and coaching that proved best but it’ll be tested with three of the team’s top four scorers now gone.
Even without Trent Forrest, Devin Vassell, and Patrick Williams, the Seminoles have plenty of talent coming back and into the program. Five-star freshman Scottie Barnes is viewed as a “point forward”, with his versatility a needed boost for the offense. That’ll allow MJ Walker, the team’s lone returning double-digit scorer from last year to excel off the ball. The hope is that top-tier JUCO guard Sardaar Calhoun also will be a double-digit scorer as well in the rotation.
"In a league where all the headlines go towards North Carolina, Duke, and Virginia, the Seminoles have quietly been one of the most consistent teams in the conference. – Adam Childs (@AdamChilds21)"
While the rest of the roster doesn’t jump out in terms of production and starpower, they’ll come at you in droves. The frontcourt depth, led by Raiquan Gray, Malik Osbourne, and Balsa Koprivica is just as imposing on both ends of the court. Meanwhile, wing Anthony Polite has breakout potential if he gets enough playing time.
Coach Hamilton has built this program towards the top-tier of the ACC. And while there may not be a clear-cut All-ACC player on the roster outside of Barnes, there’s plenty of depth and experience to once again rack up wins and finish towards the top of the league. And if the younger teams struggle, don’t be surprised if Florida State makes another run.
