SoCon Basketball: In-depth look at UNCG senior guard Isaiah Miller
By Andrew Tineo
Expectations for Isaiah Miller for 2020-21 season
One of the ways UNCG HC Wes Miller utilizes the guard is top of the key lobs. Throughout his Junior highlights, there are litters of plays at the top of the key where it’s almost a give and go as Miller races to the hoop for the dunk.
Miller’s athleticism is among the best in the NCAA and his tenacity on defense puts him up there with the likes of Kansas’s Marcus Garret, Baylor’s Davion Mitchell, and Richmond’s Jacob Gilyard.
Miller’s best offense at times becomes his defense. When he gets an opportunity at a steal, he takes it. The former Dunk champion showcases his athleticism on the other end with a highlight-reel finish.
Although there are many bright spots within Miller’s game, there is one flaw that I’m sure HC Wes Miller will be hoping for Isaiah to be improving on. Even with Miller being great in the paint, he’s a well than a below-average three-point shooter.
There was only one instance last year, where Miller shot over 50% from three when attempting two or more times. In the three major games last season, against Kansas, Georgetown, and NC State, he shot just 3-12 from the perimeter.
Miller shot just 23% from 3 point range last year after connecting on just 28% the year before. Although those numbers are not very good, there is hope for change, with development. He has proven to be a star and that his athleticism can take him a long ways.
One of the big question marks for not only fans but for NBA scouts is that if Miller can produce some sort of a consistent 3 point shot. The rest of the intangibles are there for the veteran star, but if Miller can hit at least 35% of his shots from the perimeter, his stock will escalate.
Regardless of age, Miller shows that he can perform against quality competition on a consistent basis. Expectations for Miller are sky-high, as he has already shattered the all-time steals record last season. With Furman and ETSU as the main contenders, look for Miller to win the SoCon Player of the Year again and lead the Spartans to their third SoCon Championship in the previous six years.
With the abundance of success from UNCG, it’s pretty clear that the Spartans are here to stay in the SoCon. However, this may be the last ride for the best player that has done it in Greensboro. Miller is must watch and he jumps off the screen with his athleticism and makes every defensive coach elated with his high-end motor on that end of the court.
