Maryland Basketball: Key players to watch on Terps for 2020-21 season
By Sean Cole
Maryland’s breakout player – Aaron Wiggins
If there was any player on the Terps that has high expectations, it would be Aaron Wiggins. The 6’6 200lb Junior shooting guard from Greensboro, North Carolina is the regaining 2019 – 2020 Big 10 Sixth Man of Year and it was well deserved.
Wiggins came off the bench to average 10.4 points per game, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game while playing starter minutes at 28/6 minutes per game. Wiggins was for the most part a big spark coming off the bench on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. When Wiggins was out on the floor, opponents had to respect his ability to shoot from the 3-point line, as Wiggins is dangerous from beyond the 3-point line.
Wiggins showed flashes of being the sharpshooter that was highly recruited out of high school. Even before he stepped on campus, he had the eyes of NBA scouts taking notice. Last year there was Anthony Cowan and Jalen “Stix” Smith, so there were no questions about who the go-to guys were.
Those are big shoes to fill, but, this year, it is time for Wiggins’ turn in the spotlight. Wiggins seemed to maybe have the sophomore jinx and was inconsistent, as his 3 point shooting went down from 41% his freshmen year to 31% last year. Wiggins has the talent and ability to be one of the top scorers in the Country.
If Wiggins plays defense, the way he can play defense and if he can score consistently, the Terps will have another outstanding year and the Terps could have another All-American in the making.
