Mid-major Basketball: Preseason Top-25 power rankings for 2020-21 season
13. Austin Peay Governors
While rivals Belmont and Murray State will once again be contenders to win the Ohio Valley Conference, they’ll have to also deal with the Governors, who have arguably the best player in the league in Terry Taylor. The 6’5 guard/forward averaged a team-leading 21.8 ppg and 11.0 rpg en route to winning last season’s OVC Player of the Year Award.
He’s back for his senior season and likely will put up another 20 and 10 campaign. But don’t discount the supporting cast, including guard Jordyn Adams, who averaged 17.4 ppg. Guard Carlos Páez is back to facilitate the offense, while 6’2 guard Alec Woodard is set for a breakout campaign.
The news wasn’t all great for Austin Peay, as they lost a pair of key rotation pieces to the transfer portal in Antwuan Butler and Eli Abaev. However, they will get back Reginald Gee after he played just six games last season. The former All-SWAC guard at Alabama State will provide a needed balance in terms of scoring in the backcourt to help out Terry.
It’s been a while since the Governors won the Ohio Valley Conference and both Belmont and Murray State looks to be formidable since their best players are all juniors. With this being Taylor’s last year in college, this is an opportunity for the program to win that they have to take advantage of. In terms of all of the mid-major basketball conferences, the OVC at the top will be the most entertaining.
