Big 12 Basketball: Ranking of top 20 overall players since 2000
By Andrew Tineo
12. Jarrett Culver – F Texas Tech (2017-2019)
Career Stats (2 seasons): 14.9 PPG, 5.6 RPG
The former number six overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, was considered to be a monumental piece to Texas Tech’s success. Culver was at Tech for just two seasons. However, his two seasons were the best Texas Tech has had since the Bob Knight era. Culver as a freshman, bursted onto the scene, averaging 11.2 PPG, and nearly five rebounds off 38% shooting from beyond the arc.
For a 6’5 combo guard, Culver had the intangibles to be a great NBA player. However, scouts wanted more film as Culver only started half of the season. After an Elite 8 finish, Culver became the #1 guy with Keenan Evans graduating. Culver would put up a monstrous 18.5 PPG on 46% from the field and added 6.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game.
The most successful season at Texas Tech came during his sophomore season when he led Texas Tech to a National Championship berth. Even with the Red Raiders falling short to Virginia, Culver and Tech showed that this program is here to stay as being nationally relevant.
Culver would finish second in the conference in assists, third in points per game, and First in the conference in total points. Culver finished with an abundance of accolades, winning Big 12 Player of the Year, First Team All-American, and Finalist for the Wooden Award.
Even with his stats, the biggest impact on the Texas Tech program and where they are apart from Chris Beard has been the leadership and skill of Jarrett Culver.
