Justin Champagnie tallies the most single- ACC game points

The ACC is never short on individual talent, and the 2020-21 season will be no different. With talented players like North Carolina’s Garrison Brooks, Sam Hauser at Virginia, and Chris Lykes in Miami being odds-on favorites for being selected to the All-ACC Team, there will be some big individual numbers put up in ACC play this season.

With talented Freshman Jalen Johnson (Duke), Day’Ron Sharpe (UNC) and No. 5 on the Recruiting Services Consensus Index Scottie Barnes (Florida State) joining the ranks, 30 point performances could be a nightly occurrence.

At the conclusion of the 2019-20 ACC season, there were 14 games that a player tallied 30 points or more versus an ACC opponent. Leading the way was the 37 points that NBA bound Jordan Nwora dropped on Boston College and the 35 Garrison Brooks ended up totaling versus Georgia Tech. With Brooks being one of just two players returning from the top 10 in points per game, the door is open for a new player to make his mark.

Justin Champagnie is going to be the player who walks through that door. Despite averaging just 12.7 points last season, the 6’6 guard scored 30 points versus Georgia Tech and 31 in the ACC tournament versus Wake Forest. As a Freshman, Champagne averaged a team-high 11 field goals per game while attempting at least 15 in five of those games.

The transfer of Trey McGowens leaves an additional 11 shot attempts per game available, and the player to pick up the majority of them will be Champagnie. This will not lead to Champagnie leading the ACC in scoring average, but no other player will have a higher scoring total in an ACC game this season.
