NBA Draft 2020: Top 3 options for Dallas Mavericks to select at No. 18
3. F Xavier Tillman – Michigan State Spartans
Tillman’s development has been one of the better coaching jobs under head coach Tom Izzo at Michigan State. His potential was always there, including playing more than Nick Ward did in the 2019 NCAA Tournament since he was more versatile. As a full-time starter this past season, the 6’8 big man averaged 13.7 ppg and 10.3 rpg.
Tillman was a solid offensive player but it was his other talents that made him a legit 1st round NBA Draft talent. He averaged 3.0 apg and blocked over two shots a game, adding over a steal as well. The 6’8 forward was awarded Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and was more than worthy of the honor. Tillman was able to guard bigger bodies in the post while handling his own on the perimeter against either face-up forwards or in pick and roll situations.
The only concerns with Tillman at the next level is that he’s a tweener in the frontcourt while having limited offensive potential at the next level since he doesn’t spread the floor. However, that shouldn’t be a deal-breaker for a Mavericks squad that already is elite on offense. Tillman’s defensive and passing ability would be something different the franchise doesn’t currently have on the roster, which is why he’d be a good fit at No. 18.
May be a bit of a reach but the lack of frontcourt options that should go in the top-20 would give them some leeway.
