Big Ten Basketball: Key player to watch on each team for 2020-21 season
Iowa – SO Joe Toussaint
Joe Toussaint was a guy who didn’t play all that much for the Hawkeyes, but if he can take a massive leap in his second season could be a really good player.
Another guy whose numbers don’t jump off the page like Phinisee, but Toussaint in his limited minutes showed what type of player he could be if he got an increase in playing time. He only played 18 minutes per game last year and only started 20 of Iowa’s 31 games. Toussaint could be in for a breakout season if he can get on the floor more, which will be tough to do behind Jordan Bohannon and Joe Wieskamp.
Watching Toussaint on tape, he looks like a crafty, small guard who knows how to use his body and his dribble to get to the basket. He’s a scrappy defender, which can be a good and bad thing, as he got into some foul trouble last season. If he can cut down on his fouls, he’ll get to see the court more.
Toussaint’s best game came against Penn State in a loss, where he scored a season-high 18 points with four rebounds, hitting two three-pointers. Toussaint being that top guard off the bench for the Hawkeyes would do wonders for their Final Four hopes, as Luka Garza will demand most of the attention.
