NCAA Basketball: Biggest takeaways from 2020 2K Empire Classic
Rhode Island Rams
Positive – Experience against quality competition
The beneficiary of Baylor’s absence, Rhode Island was able to play against a pair of power conference foes in the non-conference. Although they came in defeats, this was great film for head coach David Cox, as he works with various lineups using all of these new transfers brought in this offseason. We know about star guard Fatts Russell but Jeremy Sheppard looks like a legit second option, while Antwan Walker‘s 21 points against Arizona State is a good sign as well.
Had the Rams played a couple of “cupcakes” to start off the season, they would’ve likely had two wins instead of losses at this point. But that would’ve been shortsighted, as Coach Cox can now see who is ready for Atlantic 10 play and who needs to be less of a factor going forward. The competitiveness of the Rams in both games gives confidence that they’ll be a contender in league play.
Negative – Bubble hopes took a major hit
The Atlantic 10 typically schedules strong throughout, with Rhode Island being no exception. However, scheduling tough means nothing if you can’t get the win. And the Rams have the chance both times, including against No. 3 Villanova to get a resume builder.
With fewer opportunities in the non-conference, the Rams will need to beat either Seton Hall, Western Kentucky, or Boston College to get a quality win. Otherwise, they’ll have to win the Atlantic 10 Tournament to get a bid.
