One score sheet that seemed to catch everyone’s attention during week one was San Diego State’s double-digit win over #22 UCLA on opening night. Many were quick to label this as an upset, but the performances of the two squads in recent years suggest otherwise. Either way, it was a huge win for an Aztecs team that is out to show that it is worthy of an at-large bid if it were to not capture the Mountain West crown.

After its convincing win against UCLA, the Aztecs then went on to beat UC Irvine by double digits on Friday night. This win will most likely not play much of a role in shaping their NCAA Tournament resume, but it was a solid follow up performance for a team that a lot of people may have questioned coming into this season.

After the departure of a few of its better players, it is easy to see why many NCAA basketball fans may not expect this year’s team to be as good; however, this Aztecs team still has a lot of depth and an ability to score with ease. Their feisty defense is also still a huge factor this year.

Another thing that helps enhance San Diego State’s bracketology outlook is the fact that the rest of the Mountain West has not looked overly convincing thus far. Utah State, the Mountain West tournament champion last season, is currently sitting at 1-2. Nevada looks to have a solid team, but for now, San Diego State has the most convincing win and looks the best.
