St. John’s Basketball: 3 takeaways from triumph over Boston College
#3: Champagnie’s heroic season debut
Julian Champagnie had as good as a season opener that Head Coach Mike Anderson and St. John’s fans could have hoped for. The Brooklyn native, itching to get back on the court, picked up where he left off last season, finishing with a double-double (29 points, 10 rebounds) in 29 minutes of action.
The reigning All-BIG EAST Freshman Team selection from a year ago proved last night why he is going to be St. John’s most important player this season.
Champagnie was able to stay on the court for extended minutes because of his disciplined defense. The sophomore only committed two fouls in his 29 minutes of play and was efficient with the basketball, turning the ball over only three times.
Not only was Champagnie the Johnnies’ most reliable offensive weapon last night, the Bishop Loughlin grad, made the crucial defensive stop on a Wynston Tabbs layup attempt that could have tied the contest.
If Champagnie can put up performances like this throughout the season, St. John’s can be a team that rises up the ladder in the BIG EAST rankings ahead of postseason play.
St. John’s returns to action on Wednesday when it squares off with BYU in Bubbleville at Mohegan Sun Arena at 5 p.m.
