10. George Washington Colonials

  • 2020-21 record: 1-2
  • Wins: vs. Coppin State (85-69)
  • Losses: at Navy (78-71), vs. Hampton (82-78)

This has been anything but an ideal start for Jamion Christian’s squad, who have collected a decent loss at Navy (78-71) and a horrible loss to Hampton (82-78), but nabbed their first win of the season on Saturday over Coppin State (85-69).

There are some positives to take away from those games: they shoot extremely well overall (48.3%), particularly from inside the arc (59.1%), and they get to the line, having been there 77 times already in just three games.  They have also had great success on the boards, with four players averaging 8.5 rebounds or more – and the team, as a whole, owns a plus-4 margin.

They struggle taking care of the ball, however, turning it over in 22.2% of their possessions – the 207th-most.  They are also struggling shooting the ball from beyond the arc, knocking down just 26.3% of their attempts.

The Colonials have had some stand-out performances to be optimistic about, however.  The trio of James Bishop, Jamison Battle, and Jameer Nelson Jr. have all been sensational thus far – averaging 20.7, 15.0, and 13.7 points per game, respectively.

George Washington will have some time to fix their issues – they take on UMBC and Delaware next week, both middle-of-the-pack Div. I teams that rank at 209th and 224th in KenPom.  They will face a quality challenge after that, taking on South Carolina on Dec. 14.
