NCAA Basketball: Luka Garza, Drew Timme among top-10 POY contenders
8. Ayo Dosunmu | 6’5 Point Guard | Illinois Fighting Illini
The Illinois Fighting Illini got some good news when it was announced point guard Ayo Dosunmu was returning for his junior season. He’s putting up career-high numbers since returning in 2020-21 with Illinois, producing 23.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game.
Dosunmu is shooting 50 percent the field and a career-high 47.1 percent from 3-point range as well as the Fighting Illini are 3-1 on the season. They’re coming off a loss to No. 2 ranked Baylor, where Dosunmu was tested shooting the ball. He shot the ball 6-of-18 from the field while finishing with 18 points, six rebounds, and five assists.
It was an early test for him but with Kofi Cockburn and his 13.0 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks per game still in the wheelhouse, leaning on him should lead to greener pastures as they approach Big Ten play.
Look for Dosunmu to elevate his game with the Duke Blue Devils coming up in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Tuesday night. Duke has their own slew of talented guards to lean on and freshman Jalen Johnson.
