Despite its top two returning scorers from 2019-20 who have yet to play alongside each other at the start of this season (Julian Champagnie and Rasheem Dunn), St. John’s has found ways to win to start the season with a 3-1 record.
Sophomore guard Julian Champagnie (27 ppg, 7.5 rpg) missed the first two games due to an ankle injury. However, Champagnie returned and has been on a tear during his last two games, scoring 29 points and snagging 10 rebounds in 29 minutes against Boston College, as well as dropping 25 points against BYU.
Having Champagnie back has been a major help towards the scoring for St. John’s. Through two games, he is 21-for-40 shooting from the floor (52.5 percent).
Senior guard, Rasheem Dunn (5 ppg, 5 apg), who averaged 11.9 points per game last season, has missed the last three games after suffering a concussion in St. John’s season opener against St. Peter’s.
Junior guard Vince Cole (13 ppg), was key in his St. John’s debut, scoring 21 points and shooting 5-for-6 from three-point range, including the game-winning three-point shot from the left corner with 7.8 seconds remaining to give St. John’s the victory over St. Peter’s 76-75.
St. John’s would then extend their winning streak to three with an 82-65 victory over La Salle and a 97-93 win over Boston College. In their last game, the Red Storm dropped their first game of the season with a 74-68 loss to BYU. The Cougars held St. John’s to just 4-for-21 shooting from three-point range.
St. John’s has a great opportunity to start off 5-1 in non-conference play with two more home non-conference games against Stony Brook today and Rider on Tuesday.
