Western Kentucky Hilltoppers

After a really impressive run in South Dakota at the Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic, the Hilltoppers had a golden opportunity to solidify themselves as a top 25 team and create a resume that the bracketologists were sure to become enamored with when they faced off with Louisville on Tuesday.

Unfortunately, they laid a complete egg against the Cardinals, losing by 21 points. Even more concerning, the box score may have confirmed the main question that many have of Western Kentucky. How much depth is there behind Taeveion Hollingsworth and Charles Bassey? Based on this game against a quality ACC opponent, the answer is not much as the duo combined for 32 points with no other Hilltopper scoring more than five.

To make matter worse for Western Kentucky, the wins it earned over Northern Iowa and Memphis in Sioux Falls don’t look great anymore. Northern Iowa is 1-3 and Memphis, 3-2 after a loss to VCU, a mid-tier A-10 opponent.

Fortunately, for WKU, they have a matchup with a Rhode Island team that has proved it is NCAA tournament-caliber on December 13th. They better hope that game gets played and they need to win it.

Unfortunately for them, it’s the last good game it has on its schedule as playing in Conference USA will more than likely not give them opportunities for resume-building wins. The Hilltoppers will almost certainly have to win that conference’s championship to get a bid to the 2020-21 NCAA Tournament after it’s poor showing against Louisville.
