2. Poor shot selection

St. John’s shooting struggles have hampered the Johnnies in close games this season and Sunday’s performance against the Hoyas was no different.

The Johnnies closed the game not converting a field goal over the last 3:59 of the game. Teams will lose nine out of 10 games in overtime with that stat.

The shot selection late in the contest was abysmal. Posh Alexander and Vince Cole took questionable three-pointers late in the overtime period with plenty of time in the shot clock.

The Red Storm only shot 15-for-40 in the first half, struggling to establish any momentum heading into the half. Alexander and Julian Champagnie led the Johnnies with 10 and eight points respectively in the first half but struggled over the remaining 25 minutes of play.

In the second half, the Johnnies shot better percentage-wise from the floor, but 11 turnovers and missed free throws down the line hurt the Red Storm from closing out the game in regulation.

Alexander finished with 16 points off of 6-of-12 shooting while Champagnie finished with 13 points and 3-of-11 shooting from the floor.

Guard Greg Williams Jr., who played a total of 40 minutes in Sunday’s loss to the Hoyas, only took nine shots from the floor and none from behind the arc. The junior from Lafayette, La., finished with 13 points.
