Reasons for Hope: They have some quality wins defeating a Liberty team who defeated two SEC teams on a neutral court and beating a previously undefeated and ranked Ohio State team. Their victory against Notre Dame is a noteworthy win as well. Their defense with the exception of one game has been very good.
Reasons to be Pessimistic: They lost their only true road game after dominating Miami in the 1st half but got outscored by 22 points in the second half. They never put themselves in a position to beat Clemson and outside of two games, their offense has struggled.
Brief Overview of the Season
Coach Matt Painter returns three of his top three scorers in center/forward Trevion Williams, guard Eric Hunter Jr., and guard Sasha Stefanovic. These three will have the Boilermakers ready to compete in the Big Ten this upcoming season.
They have won six games this season with a relatively young, talented core upfront on their front line which has allowed their guards to make some open looks from beyond the arc to give them some key victories like Ohio State for example.
Six Purdue players are all averaging eight or more points a game and they are all needed to fuel the Boilermaker offense moving forward. The Boilermakers are seeing tremendous growth in junior power forward Williams who is having great and productive play during this season as he is Purdue’s leading scorer averaging almost 14 points a game.
Head coach Matt Painter will continue to work in the late hours of the night to have the Boilermakers ready to compete in the Big Ten this season. Purdue has had two losses thus far but they have a quality Big Ten win against top 20 ranked Ohio State. Look for the Boilermakers to make a jump in the next Big Ten power rankings. Purdue next plays at Iowa on Tuesday.
