Big East Basketball: 2020-21 power rankings heading into New Year
8. St. Johns 6-4 (1-3)
Mike Anderson and St. Johns’ record is not indicative of how well it has played this season. While there were some close games early on against lower-tier opponents, the Red Storm did not drop a single one of them and figured out how to play winning basketball in a one-point win over Saint Peter’s, a four-point win over Boston College, and a 17-point win over LaSalle.
A year or two ago, the Red Storm would have surely dropped one of those and that shows tremendous promise and growth for season two in Queens for Anderson.
Big East play, however, has proved a little bit tougher. The Johnnies have lost handily to Creighton and Seton Hall, neither results you can get mad at, but they did split a pair of games with Georgetown for their only conference victory, and like we mentioned before, the Hoyas aren’t very good. In order for the Red Storm to increase its ranking in the conference pecking order, they are going to have to start showing consistency against Big East bottom feeders.
On the very bright side, Julian Champagnie (20.3 Pts, 7.5 Reb, 2.0 Ast) has picked up right where he left off in 2019-20. The 6’8 guard is a human highlight reel and if he’s not careful this may be his final year at St. Johns as his size and skill create upside that NBA scouts won’t be able to ignore.
